Meet the Band: Premee Mohamed

July 31, 2023

Weird Little Worlds is welcoming yet another fabulous writer to our mix of weird and wonderful contributors to Playlist of the Damned. Help us welcome award-winning author Premee Mohamed!

Premee Mohamed is an Indo-Caribbean scientist and speculative fiction author based in Edmonton, Alberta. Premee holds two degrees from the University of Alberta, one in genetics and another in environmental science. She is a policy specialist for Alberta Environment and Parks working on policy about human activities on the landscape including mitigation, monitoring, clean-up, and remediation.

Premee is the author of the Beneath the Rising series of novels, which have been finalists for the Crawford Award, British Fantasy Award, Locus Award, and Aurora Award. Her short fiction has appeared in print and audio venues including Analog, Augur, Nightmare Magazine, Slate, Fireside Fiction, and PodCastle. In 2017 she was nominated for the Pushcart Prize for her story ‘Willing’ (Third Flatiron Press).

As with many authors, the reading and writing bug bit early and hard. Even though her chosen career path is in science. Writing is also a deep part of her nature that she nurtures whenever she can. Although not a fan of horror movies, Preemie love the in-depth nature of feeling and exploring the basis of emotions and human nature that horror provides in what she reads and writes. Premee’s goal is to write powerful emotions with strong female characters.

Her awards include:

Nebula Award for Best Novella (2022)- And What Can We Offer You Tonight

World Fantasy Award—Novella (2022)- And What Can We Offer You Tonight

Aurora Award for Best Novelette/Novella (2022)- The Annual Migration of Clouds

She is a Social Media Manager and Assistant Editor for the short audio science fiction venue Escape Pod, and was a Capital City Press Featured Writer for 2019/2020 with the Edmonton Public Library. Her guest editing positions include novellas with Interstellar Flight Press and short fiction with Apparition Lit.

Premee chose “I Died So I Could Haunt You” by the Stars as her representation on our author mix tape.

She can be found on Twitter and Instagram at @premeesaurus and on her website at www.premeemohamed.com.
