Meet the Band: V. Castro

July 3, 2023

Violet Castro is a new addition to the Weird Little Worlds anthology family. We’re so proud to welcome her as a contributor to Playlist of the Damned, and we can’t wait for you to experience her unique voice.

V. Castro is a two-time Bram Stoker award-nominated writer born in San Antonio, Texas, to Mexican American parents. Each generation of women in her family has learned to break the mold and step into new heights of self-expression. Her grandmother was a farm worker, her mother became a lawyer. Violet attended Drexel University and received a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and History.

V. was raised on Mexican folklore and the urban legends of Texas, which cultivated an early love for horror. She grew up reading Isabel Allende, Sandra Cisneros, and Rudolfo Anaya. V. has been writing her own horror stories since she was a child and found herself wanting to join the ranks of favorite authors like Dean Koontz, Stephen King, or R. L. Stine with her distinct background and voice.

It is her goal to represent women of color and their unique experiences in literature. Writing is a form of self-expression and exploration that V. uses to connect with other Latina women who want to have their stories told and their voices heard. Horror allows her the freedom to strip away common misconceptions and empty stereotypes to talk about journeys of self-exploration, core emotions, traumas, mental health, and life experiences that often get glossed over in literature and in life.

V. Castro’s newest titles include The Haunting of Alejandra and Aliens: Vasquez. She currently lives in the United Kingdom with her family. She fills her days with writing and traveling with her children.

V. has chosen Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar to represent her work in the Playlist of the Damned author mix tape.
